When seeking treatment, don't be confused. A sleep laboratory is not the same as a sleep center. In fact, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) has designated specific standards for both sleep centers and laboratories. Whereas sleep laboratories are limited to the evaluation and treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders, sleep centers are a comprehensive sleeping disorders program that encompasses the evaluation and treatment of numerous sleep disorders and behaviors.
The Lake Hospital System Sleep Center is the only sleep center in Lake County accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
The Sleep Center performs an overnight sleep test or polysomnogram, which is used to help identify various sleeping disorders and measure various sleep stages during the test. To understand the brain activity and your body during sleep, the polysomnogram will measure your brain waves, muscle movement, eye movement, breathing, heart rate, leg activity and snoring by placing small sensors on your head, face and body.
The polysomnogram is used in conjunction with various sleep questionnaires, health/medical history, observation during sleep, sleep diary and the physician's knowledge of sleep medicine to help reach a diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options.
Sometimes additional sleep tests are performed to help establish a diagnosis or treatment, including the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) and the maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT). The MSLT is performed to help evaluate and diagnose other sleep problems such as narcolepsy, excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy. The MWT is used to evaluate and diagnose sleepiness and alertness.
